North Port man arrested for sexual assault and kidnapping a minor, dies while in custody

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) is conducting an in-custody death investigation that occurred at Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH) early Monday morning.
Stephen Edward Hudek (DOB 06/23/1962), of North Port, had been transferred from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office correctional facility to SMH days earlier for treatment however due to HIPPA privacy, further information cannot be made available. Per policy, sheriff’s office inmates requiring treatment at a medical facility are accompanied by sheriff’s deputies regardless of the length of treatment.
Mr. Hudek was pronounced deceased at 2:47 a.m. Monday morning following life-saving measures by a sheriff’s deputy and hospital staff. No signs of trauma were noted and nothing suspicious was observed. The sheriff’s office has opened an investigation as the subject was in the custody of a deputy at the time he was pronounced deceased.
The case remains an active investigation pending the report from the Medical Examiner’s Office.
