Tuesday, our team responded to reports of a wanted subject seen in the Preto/Playmore area. The individual we were attempting to locate is wanted for possession of a firearm by a juvenile delinquent (now an adult), two counts of aggravated assault, and is believed to be responsible for multiple vehicle thefts in the area.
Officers arrived and established a perimeter. During the search, a male matching the suspect’s physical description was located with his face and hands concealed. When officers approached, he fled on foot. A Taser was deployed, and he was taken into custody. After contact was made, it was determined he was not the wanted subject. He is being charged with obstruction based on his actions. Why he chose to flee is still under investigation.
While en route to assist with the call, one of our units was involved in a crash at US 41 and River Road. The officer had emergency lights and sirens activated and was attempting to clear the intersection, traveling at less than five miles per hour, when the collision occurred, causing the police vehicle to roll. Thankfully, there were no life-threatening injuries. The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is reviewing the incident. The driver who struck the officer has been cited for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.
We also want to address rumors circulating on social media suggesting officers were apprehending individuals on behalf of ICE. This is false. At no point did NPPD detain anyone for immigration enforcement, nor are we “hunting” individuals based on immigration status. Tuesday’s efforts were exclusively focused on locating a specific violent offender wanted for multiple serious crimes.
This remains an active investigation. We appreciate the community’s support and encourage residents to rely on official NPPD updates for accurate information.
