Latest update: Plane crashes into Gulf of Mexico after leaving Venice Airport: FAA

VPD

VThe Venice Police Department and Venice Fire Rescue, along with several other agencies, are investigating a possible airplane crash in the Gulf of Mexico approximately 2.5 miles west of the Venice Fishing Pier. This morning, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) contacted VPD regarding a plane that took off from Venice Municipal Airport Saturday night, but never arrived to its planned destination. Around that time, recreational divers located a body in the water that may have been associated with a plane. No plane has not been recovered at this time.

VPD is coordinating the investigation with VFR, the FAA, Venice Airport Director, U.S. Coast Guard, Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, FWC, and the Sarasota Police Department.

There will be a lot of activity in the area as divers and marine assets coordinate our search efforts.
