The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to assist the Venice Police Department with a death investigation that occurred Monday evening.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to assist the Venice Police Department (VPD) with a death investigation following an incident that occurred Monday evening.
Just before 5:00 p.m., VPD officers responded to the Publix located at 1445 E. Venice Avenue for the report of possible shoplifting. As outlined in Venice, Florida Municipal Government‘s initial news release, the suspect brandished a knife and caused several lacerations to his neck and chest. Despite VPD’s life-saving efforts, the suspect was transported to Venice Regional Hospital and pronounced deceased.
The decedent in this investigation has been identified as Randy Dull, DOB 02/06/60, of Tangerine Street in Nokomis. Next of kin has been notified.
Dull’s death is the result of his own self-inflicted lacerations however, as always, an official cause of death will be determined and released by the medical examiner’s office.
The investigation is ongoing and no further updates are expected today.
