Today, July 13, 2022, the Venice Police Department (VPD) arrested Juan Manuel Hernandez (DOB 9-18-1997) and Christina Grace Casella (DOB 1-22-2000) in connection to a fatal crash that occurred on Oct. 23, 2021, at 10:47 p.m. on U.S. 41 just south of the Roberts Bay Bridge.
Following a thorough investigation, it was determined a sedan, driven by Casella, was northbound on U.S. 41 with Hernandez in the front right passenger seat. As the arrestees were traveling, they entered into a verbal argument at which point Hernandez attempted to turn the vehicle onto Venetia Bay Blvd. Casella then overcorrected the steering wheel, which caused the vehicle to enter the southbound lanes and strike the 35-year-old male victim’s vehicle. The victim sustained life-threatening injuries and sadly succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Traffic Homicide investigators developed probable cause, and after consultation with the State Attorney’s Office, warrants were obtained for Christina Casella and Juan Hernandez. Casella was arrested in Port Charlotte and charged with vehicular manslaughter and DUI manslaughter. Hernandez was arrested in South Venice and charged with vehicular manslaughter and operating a motor vehicle with no valid driver’s license causing death.
VPD’s Traffic Homicide Unit worked diligently to bring closure to the victim’s family in this case and reminds everyone to drive responsibly. Thank you to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Apprehension Unit and the Charlotte County Sheriffs’ Office Fugitive Apprehension Unit for their assistance with this case.
