NY Imposes Indoor Mask Mandate, Up to $1,000 Fine for Each Violation

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) on Friday imposed a mask mandate requiring masks to be worn indoors in public businesses if vaccine requirements aren’t in place.

The new business and venue mandate takes effect Monday, Dec. 13 through Jan. 15, 2022, and will extend to both patrons and staff.

“A violation of any provision of this measure is subject to all civil and criminal penalties, including a maximum fine of $1,000 for each violation,” a news release by the governor’s office states.

The new mask and vaccine requirements, ostensibly put in place to protect New Yorkers, come as the state has reportedly seen an uptick in Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations as the winter months kick off.

Hochul went on to blame the necessity for mask requirements on the unvaccinated.

“I want to thank the more than 80 percent of New Yorkers who have done the right thing to get fully vaccinated. If others will follow suit, these measures will no longer be necessary,” the governor stated.

“I have warned for weeks that additional steps could be necessary, and now we are at that point based upon three metrics: Increasing cases, reduced hospital capacity, and insufficient vaccination rates in certain areas.”
