At approximately 7 p.m. on September 16, 2021 deputies were dispatched to the 7000 block of Highgate Lane after receiving a call about a domestic incident. According to the caller, Michael Harshberger had just beaten up an elderly man inside the home. That victim was unresponsive and bleeding from the head. Patrol deputies arrived on scene, located Michael Harshberger and arrested him without incident. The victim was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

 
Detectives learned from others on scene that Michael Harshberger and the victim, who both live at this address, were involved in a verbal altercation when Michael hit the victim in the head with an unknown object. The attack continued for some time causing extensive injuries to the victim.

 
Detectives are still trying to determine exactly why Michael Harshberger attacked the victim. Due to the extent of the injuries, Michael was charged with Attempted Murder and Battery on a Person Over 65.
