Incident Description
Last night during the heavy storms in the Venice area, the lift station on call technician responded to a power failure alarm at the Briarwood Master lift station. When the technician arrived, the permanently installed onsite generator was operating but not powering the station. Further investigation revealed that the generator transfer switch was struck by a power surge from lightning and was damaged. Staff was able to override the transfer switch and power to the station was able to be provided from the generator. Approximately 2,500 gallons of sewage spilled from the lift station and entered surface waters. Nothing was recovered due to heavy rains. Samples will be taken. Notifications and cleanup are proceeding per protocol.
