Suncoast: Fire crews spent most of Sunday battling a fire at the local dump

Several of our crews spent Sunday afternoon at the dump. A fire was reported just after 1 pm at the Zemel Road Landfill site. The dump is usually quiet on Sundays because it is closed for business on but because of the approximately 3 acre garbage fire, BC (battalion chief)1A was command and had Engines 5, 6, 7, Brush 5, 8, 16, Tanker 6 and Rescue 6 on the scene. Landfill staff brought up dirt and used heavy equipment to help cover smother the fire. As of 6 pm, workers were still working and using their water truck to wet the trash pile and Engine 5A was sticking around to monitor the situation.
