Sarasota: 5G install error leads to a 3,000 gallon raw wastewater spill

Incident Description
A Verizon contractor boring 5G conduit throughout the City bored through an 8″ PVC force main at 2610 Cardinal Place. City crews immediately responded to the site to shut down the lift station and take steps to contain the spill. Tankers were used to haul the wastewater from the lift station until repairs were complete. The damaged section of pipe was removed and replaced. Approximately 3,000 gallons of raw wastewater was spilled at the site. Crews were able to recover approximately 1,000 gallons. The remaining wastewater entered the storm drain that flows to Sarasota Bay. Samples will be collected. The affected area was treated with lime, hosed down and vacuumed up.
