The Sarasota Police Department is joining law enforcement agencies across five southeastern states for Operation Southern Slow Down, a regional campaign focused on reducing speeding and preventing serious crashes. The campaign runs July 13-18 and brings together agencies in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee. Through increased traffic enforcement and public education, the initiative aims to remind drivers that slowing down can save lives.

Operation Southern Slow Down is coordinated by the Florida Department of Transportation, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, the Florida Highway Patrol and local law enforcement agencies throughout the southeast. The campaign focuses on reducing speed-related crashes.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding has been a contributing factor in approximately one-third of all traffic fatalities for more than two decades. In 2024, speeding contributed to 29% of all traffic deaths nationwide. Driving too fast for road conditions, even when traveling at the posted speed limit, can also increase the risk of a crash during heavy rain, construction, reduced visibility or other hazardous conditions.

Speeding and aggressive driving don’t just endanger the driver behind the wheel. They also put passengers, pedestrians, bicyclists and other motorists at risk. If you encounter a speeding or aggressive driver:

* Move over safely if another vehicle is attempting to pass.
* Leave plenty of space between your vehicle and a speeding driver.
* Avoid engaging with aggressive drivers. If someone is tailgating or attempting to provoke you, safely move out of the way when possible.
* If you believe a driver is following or harassing you, call law enforcement when it is safe to do so.

While citations may be written, the Sarasota Police Department’s primary goal is to increase awareness, change driving behavior and improve safety for everyone on the road. Remember to:

* Slow down.
* Stay alert.
* Obey the speed limit.
* Eliminate distractions and help make the City of Sarasota’s streets safer for everyone.
