The Sarasota Police Department has terminated a probationary police officer following an internal and criminal investigation.
Gabriel Ornellas-Victorio, 38, a former Sarasota Police probationary officer, was arrested on April 30 and is facing charges of simple battery for intentionally touching or striking another person against the will of the other. The victim is a 16-year-old girl.
An internal investigation started after a complaint was received by the agency about Ornellas-Victorio’s behavior off duty. He was placed on administrative leave on April 2, 2026. While on administrative leave, a separate complaint was filed with the agency which led to a criminal investigation.
Based on probable cause developed during the criminal investigation, Ornellas-Victorio is no longer employed with the Sarasota Police Department and was terminated on April 30, 2026.
“This decision reflects our commitment to integrity and transparency. The trust of our community is earned and we will protect it,” said Chief Rex Troche. “When someone violates the law and trust placed in them, there is no path forward with our agency,” said Troche.
The charges stem from the criminal investigation. The internal investigation is ongoing. Ornellas-Victorio is being held at the Sarasota County Jail. He has been with the agency for one and a half years.
Anyone with information on this case or anyone who has had contact with Ornellas-Victorio is asked to call Detective Megan Buck with the Sarasota Police Department Criminal Investigations Division at 941-263-6067.
