Chief Troche, Deputy Chief Mayforth and the Sarasota Police Department Command Staff presented the 2025 end-of-year review to the City of Sarasota Commission on Monday, April 20, highlighting continued progress in crime reduction and major advancements in public safety initiatives. The Sarasota Police Department reported an 18% decrease in overall crime in 2025, marking the third consecutive year of declining crime rates. This follows a 21.8% reduction in 2024 and a 16.2% decrease in 2023, demonstrating a sustained, multi-year trend of improved public safety across the City of Sarasota.

Key crime reduction statistics include:

Total index offenses decreased by 18%.
Crimes reduced from 2024 to 2025 included homicide (decrease of 71.4%), robbery (decrease of 33.3%), aggravated assault (decrease of 33.5%), burglary (decrease of 13.4%), motor vehicle theft (decrease of 4.5%) and forcible sex crime (decrease of 9.1%).
In 2025, the City of Sarasota had two homicides compared to seven in 2024. Both homicide investigations in 2025 were cleared by arrest within 24 hours.

“These results reflect the dedication of our officers and professional staff, the support of our community and our continued investment in innovative policing in the City of Sarasota,” said Sarasota Police Chief Rex Troche. “We remain committed to building on this momentum to ensure the City of Sarasota remains a safe place to live, work and play.”

Another key milestone in 2025 was the completion of the Sarasota Police Department’s Real-Time Operations Center (ROC). This state-of-the-art facility enhances public and officer safety by providing immediate access to critical data, live intelligence and integrated technology. The ROC allows officers to respond more effectively to incidents as they unfold, while serving as a strong deterrent to criminal activity. In 2025, the ROC assisted with more than 500 cases city-wide. The implementation of the ROC significantly strengthens the Sarasota Police Department’s intelligence-led policing strategy, allowing for real-time directed operations that are more precise and proactive. The ROC supports stronger case development by improving evidence collection and coordination, contributing to more effective prosecutions and higher conviction rates.
