Officers with the Sarasota Police Department responded to Sarasota Military Academy just after 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 18, after a student brought a backpack to school that was later deemed suspicious. For safety reasons, school staff moved the backpack outside onto school property before Sarasota Police officers arrived.
As a precaution, students and faculty members in the building closest to the backpack were moved to another area of campus. All students and staff were safe and not hurt during the incident.
Officers closed Orange Avenue between 8th Street and 10th Street while the backpack was examined. A law enforcement bomb squad from a neighboring agency responded and found inactive grenades inside the backpack. The grenades were real but had been drilled out at the bottom and were removed by law enforcement.
After a short time, students and faculty returned to class. The Sarasota Police Department appreciates the community’s patience during the investigation.
