Man wanted in Desoto County apprehended in Charlotte County after a high speed chase

Yesterday, Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) Detectives attempted to apprehend wanted suspect Philip McBurney. Instead of surrendering, McBurney rammed two CCSO vehicles (thankfully no one was injured) and fled at a high rate of speed.

But this wasn’t our first rodeo. Narcotics Detectives with CCSO and your DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) already had a backup plan in motion. As McBurney headed toward DeSoto County, Detective James Albritton and Sergeant Matthew Proudfit positioned themselves to intercept him.

Although McBurney thought he had gotten away, Detectives maintained intelligence on his location. He ultimately abandoned his vehicle near SW Terrell Street, where responding deputies quickly established a perimeter. He was located nearby and apprehended.

CCSO Charges:

• Fleeing to elude LEO with wanton disregard for public safety

• Leaving the scene of a crash with property damage

• No valid driver’s license

DCSO Charges:

• Parole warrant

• Possession of controlled substance (amphetamine)

• Possession of marijuana (<20 grams)

• Possession of drug paraphernalia

• Resisting officer without violence

• No valid driver’s license
