City of Venice responds to the Governors executive order eliminating the ability to collect fines on their mask edict

By Executive Order, Gov. Ron DeSantis moved Florida into Phase 3 reopenings on Friday, Sept. 25. Restaurants and bars may now operate at full capacity.

In addition, in-person quorums for Venice City Council and advisory board meetings will again be required beginning on Oct. 1. The public will still be able to watch and participate in meetings virtually via Zoom.

The Executive Order also “suspends the collection of fines and penalties associated with COVID-19 enforced upon individuals.” According to the City Attorney, while this does not void the City of Venice’s current face covering requirements, it does limit or potentially eliminate the enforcement mechanism. While it might still be possible to issue a citation, the language suspends/prohibits the City from collecting any fine. This Executive Order also does not appear to prohibit the City from enforcing its requirement that businesses post notice of the City’s face covering requirements.
