A man in custody at the Charlotte County Jail passed away following an episode stemming from a medical condition.

In the evening of December 26, 2024, 74-year-old inmate Jack Plank (11/01/1950) succumbed to a medical episode while in custody at the Charlotte County Jail. Mr. Plank suffered from a medical condition, which was known to CCSO members at the time of his intake on December 6 when he was arrested following a domestic incident. Mr. Plank was treated both in-house and at a local hospital multiple times during his short stay. Due to his condition, Mr. Plank was housed-in-infirmary and checked on in 30-minute intervals.

A Corrections deputy discovered Mr. Plank on the floor and immediately called for help. Life-saving measures were attempted by several deputies, jail medical staff, and EMS to no avail. Mr. Plank was pronounced dead at the scene. The Major Case Unit was contacted and conducted an investigation and determined that no foul play was suspected. The Medical Examiner responded and will also conduct an autopsy on Mr. Plank.

“This is an unfortunate situation, and my heart goes out to all who knew Mr. Plank. Being in jail did not make him any less of a human being; with loved ones, friends, and family that will miss him. I thank my team for their quick actions in trying to save him, even though his condition was ultimately too severe. May he rest in peace.”
