Sarasota County lift station issues during Debby led to over 792,000 gallons of raw sewage overflows

During Tropical Storm Debby, the sanitary sewer collection system was inundated with rainfall and flooding. Despite our staff’s efforts throughout the storm, nine out of our 785 lift stations (1.1%) experienced sanitary sewer overflows. The causes included power outages, an overwhelming amount of rainwater in the system, and pumps clogged with rags.
Below is the list of stations, addresses, and approximate sewage volume spilled at each location. Due to site conditions, recovery was not possible. Many of these locations are being sampled as required, and cleanup and notifications are proceeding per protocol.
– Beneva Woods Lift Station at 3612 Beneva Woods Blvd. – 800 gallons
– Coral Club Lift Station at 3343 Clark Road – 200 gallons
– Gulf Gate Regional Lift Sation at 7302 Bounty Road – 96,000 gallons
– Linwood Regional Lift Station at 2195 Linwood Drive – 252,000 gallons (It was discovered that manholes were lifted in the road.)
– Longwood Park Master Lift Station at 6050 Longwood Run Blvd. – 4,500 gallons (pumps clogged with rags)
– Pump Station 25 at 2420 US 41, Osprey – 50,000 gallons (FPL outage)
– Riverview Lift Station at 2 Ram Bowl Way – 80,000 gallons
– Siesta Key Regional Lift Station at 5200 Oakmont Place – 309,000 gallons
– Willow Leaf Lift Station at 5123 Willow Leaf Drive – 200 gallons (FPL outage)
