A sewage spill was reported in the City of Venice at approximately 7:30 a.m. this morning, which appears to have occurred overnight Sunday, May 5, on the west side of Capri Isles Blvd., about 200 feet north of Water Street.
An 8-inch sewer force main appears to have cracked due to age. The wastewater entered the stormwater system and began to enter the Villa Capri stormwater pond. Multiple vacuum trucks were used to extract as much wastewater as possible from the ground and stormwater system and the discharge to the pond was blocked to reduce any flow into the pond. The amount of discharge is estimated at 4,000 gallons.
The wastewater flow was stopped immediately, and the area was thoroughly disinfected with lime. City Utilities staff notified the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Florida Department of Health. The pipe repair was completed at 5 p.m. today; crews are still on scene at this time. Please be cautious of workers and heavy equipment in this area of Capri Isles Blvd.
