12 Judicial Press Release

State Attorney Ed Brodsky’s office announced on 4/15/24 that Judge Thomas Krug sentenced Nyquan Priester to 45 years in prison after he was convicted by a jury of Aggravated Manslaughter with a Firearm and Shooting from a Vehicle Within 1000 feet of a Person. Priester committed the crimes on December 29, 2021. The shooting death of victim Dylan Jenkins was investigated by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. Priester’s trial was held at the Sarasota County Courthouse from February 12 through February 15, 2024, with Judge Krug presiding. On December 29, 2021 the defendant and 3 friends drove to Ackerman Park for an outdoor gathering. The defendant brought a gun along, and as he and his friends left the outdoor gathering, the defendant stated (in reference to the firearm) “I’m gonna air this bitch out.” He then fired 6 shots from the rear passenger seat, striking Dylan Jenkins in the back. Mr. Jenkins died shortly thereafter from a single gunshot wound which penetrated his lung and aorta. The defendant fled from the scene after the shooting, and several days later, he fled to Utica, New York, where he was apprehended and extradited to Sarasota on January 30, 2022. The lead prosecutor in the case, Assistant State Attorney Karen Fraivillig commented: “Dylan Jenkins, the victim in this case, was a young scholar athlete whose prowess on the track and the football field was matched by his kindness, intelligence, and good humor. He had just completed his first college semester in Michigan when he met with approximately 50 young friends and acquaintances at Ackerman Park to celebrate their Christmas break. Dylan was gunned down by the defendant in an act that was not only senseless and cowardly but showed a callous disregard for human life.
