Convicted. In late 2022 the North Port Police Department responded to a shooting call in the 5000 block of Greenwood Avenue, Grande Court Apartments. The victim did not survive. Shortly after, 52-year-old Cruz Modero of North Port was booked into the Sarasota County Jail and charged with the murder of his roommate, 43-year-old Dylan James Baker of North Port.

This week, a jury found Modero guilty of second-degree murder.

The North Port Police Department is determined to hold those accountable for such heinous acts. The results of this case are due to dedicated police work. Efforts by our Officers, Detectives, Crime Analysts, Public Safety Telecommunicators, Records Technicians, and the rest of our team. “It is always a sad situation whenever someone dies senselessly at the hands of another,” says Chief Todd Garrison. “I am thankful that we have the right people to speak for those who can not.”

Sentencing to come.
