North Port: Drive/Ride Sober or Get Pulled Over

CITY OF NORTH PORT, FL – North Port Police Officers are out in full force looking for impaired drivers. This includes those riding and driving.

During the Labor Day holiday period, including the end of summertime and the busy holiday weekend, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is working alongside the law enforcement community in North Port to decrease impaired driving and riding. From now until Sept. 4, the North Port Police Department will be participating in the Drive/Ride Sober or Get Pulled Over high-visibility enforcement period. To protect the lives of residents in the community and keep the roads safe, you’ll see law enforcement working together to get drunk drivers and riders off the roads and to help prevent the tragedies previously seen around the busy Labor Day holiday, and the days prior.

Approximately one-third of all traffic crash fatalities in the United States involve drunk drivers. In 2021, there were 13,384 people killed in drunk-driving crashes.

A focus of the campaign will be motorcycle riders. Unfortunately, the highest percentage of alcohol-impaired drivers involved in fatal crashes are often motorcycle riders. During the 2020 Labor Day holiday period 36% of those who died in drunk driving crashes were on motorcycles. As you head out to the Labor Day festivities, remember not only to drive sober but to ride sober as well.

Remember: a few dollars spent on a ride is a lot cheaper than a DUI, which can cost up to $10,000. Commit to only driving or riding when you’re 100% sober. As you head out to summertime and Labor Day holiday festivities, remember: Drive and Ride Sober or Get Pulled Over.
