CITY OF NORTH PORT, FL – With explosive growth on the horizon, North Port’s Department of Public Works is focusing on rehabilitating roads, filling potholes and improving the ride for drivers traveling in the City.

North Port is rapidly growing, and with that growth comes extra wear and tear on the City’s transportation network. In addition, the start of rainy season is also the start of pothole season, as the rainwater accelerates the development and severity of potholes. From potholes to erosion, the effects of heavier use and weather are evident in the City’s roads.

Since Oct. 1, 2022, the Road & Drainage Division staff have used just over 65 tons of asphalt, which equates to approximately 3,700 potholes filled. Public Works has received more than 120 requests by residents for pothole repair. The community is able to report a pothole by submitting it through our North Report app. Citizens should keep in mind some may not be able to be addressed by the City because they are on privately owned roads.

Public Works was forced to pivot to Hurricane Ian rehabilitation after the storm, but the annual road resurfacing project is projected to start back up in late 2023.

“One of the Department’s main focuses is making sure North Port’s roads are smooth and safe,” said Public Works Assistant Director Tricia Wisner. “Our directive has been and continues to be rehabilitating our roads – not only in the wake of Hurricane Ian, but every day before and after the storm.”
