SPD and Make A Wish Foundation rolled out the red carpet for Honorary Sarasota Police Officer Andrew Pickart this morning.

It’s not every day we have such a special visitor to Sarasota Police Headquarters. We rolled out the red carpet for Honorary Sarasota Police Officer Andrew Pickart on Monday morning. He’s already shown us incredible strength and bravery, which is inspiring at only 4 years old. 💙🚔

 

He has undergone surgery, numerous rounds of chemotherapy, and a variety of other treatments for neuroblastoma and had a simple wish: to have a beach vacation in Florida. When Make-A-Wish was planning the trip’s itinerary and knowing the youngster’s fascination with police that chase ‘bad guys,’ they partnered with us to create a day unlike any other!

 

We welcomed Andrew and his family at the front doors of our Headquarters with police cars and a police motorcycle. After that, Andrew was suited up in his own police uniform before meeting with Chief Troche and receiving a special challenge coin and an official police ID. Then, to make it official, it was standing room only as we held a swearing-in ceremony for Andrew in front of his family and the men and women of the Sarasota Police Department.

 

Following the swearing-in, each specialty unit presented Andrew with his own challenge coin from each team including SWAT, Drone, Explosive Materials Unit, Crisis Negotiation Unit, Dive Team, and Traffic Unit.

 

Then it was off to the west end law of the police department, where Andrew could see our SWAT team repel off the building and present him with his own giraffe because we learned Andrew loves giraffes. We named the special operation ‘Operation Giraffe Rescue’ just for him. Andrew met a police K-9 and sat inside our rescue vehicles before wrapping up the day with one more visit with the Chief.
