A trend of illegal water hookups from contractors in North Port

The North Port Police Department and North Port Utilities have noticed a trend of illegal water hookups from contractors. The unauthorized connections typically do not have a meter device or backflow protection, which can potentially compromise and contaminate the potable water supply, affecting nearby homes. Not only can those responsible receive costly fines, but these incidents are also considered misdemeanor crimes. If equipment is damaged as a result of hooking up without the proper approval, it can even be a felony charge.
All contractors are required to apply for and receive the proper meter from the North Port Utilities Department. Meters from other jurisdictions are not acceptable. You can do so by calling 941-240-8000 or visiting the Utilities administration building located at 5930 Sam Shapos Way.
If you see someone possibly connecting illegally to a water source in the City, please give us a call at 941-429-7300. We will investigate.
