Chief Troche and the men and women of the Sarasota Police Department held a special event Friday, June 2, 2023. A tree dedication was held in Payne Park to recognize National Police Week.

Chief Troche extended the agency’s heartfelt gratitude to Juniper Landscaping for their generous donation of a Geiger tree planted in Payne Park. The tree symbolizes the enduring bond between law enforcement and the community we serve. Like the tree’s roots, deeply embedded in the earth, our roots as an agency runs deep within the Sarasota community. We appreciate Mr. Anthony Scappatura, Operations Manager with Juniper Landscaping, for making this tree dedication possible.

The special event included a dedication to our Fallen and Legacy walls which can be found on the second floor of the Sarasota Police Department. Our Fallen wall honors Officer Warren David Jones, who was killed in the line of duty in April 1975. Our Fallen wall also honors K-9 Ando, who was euthanized due to trauma he sustained in apprehending a suspect in August 1999. K-9 Ando’s handler was the late Retired Officer Al Devaney, who was Ando’s second handler.

Our Fallen wall is a solemn tribute, a testament to the ultimate sacrifice made by our officer and K-9, who gave their lives in the line of duty. It is a constant reminder of their courage, valor, and selflessness. Their names will forever be etched in our memory and continue to inspire the men and women who walk through the halls of our Headquarters to carry on their mission. We appreciate Officer Jones’ family members for joining us, including his nephew, Dan Jones, his niece, Summer Gill, cousin Ardel Gill, her husband Roy, and their family. We appreciate Sergeant Chris Devaney, his family, his sister Jennifer Harper, and her family—their father, the late Retired Officer Al Devaney. K-9Ando was a beloved member of their family when they were growing up.

Our Legacy wall represents our gratitude to our retired officers and our department’s legacy. Their service and their contributions have shaped the fabric of our department. This program will recognize a retiree with a Legacy Ring of Honor who has continued to give back to the community following their retirement and is a goodwill ambassador to the Sarasota Police Department. Each name will be inscribed on a plaque to represent their indelible mark on our agency and their community.

Jeff Birnbach, President of the Sarasota Police Foundation, presented the first Legacy Ring of Honor to the family of Officer Warren Jones in memory of his ultimate sacrifice to our community. These walls, side by side, tell a story—a story of honor, sacrifice, and leadership. They remind us of the duty we bear as law enforcement officers and inspire us to carry forward the torch that has been passed down to us.
