Sarasota firefighter suffers medical emergency while battling structure fire

UPDATE 8/2/26 @ 5 p.m.: Earlier today, 8/2, Sarasota County Fire Department crews responded to a structure fire in the 1000 block of Herndon Place during which a firefighter experienced a medical emergency while operating on scene.
The firefighter was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital and is currently in stable condition. He is awake, talking, and responding well to the excellent care he is receiving.
 
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who responded quickly and professionally, including our Sarasota County Fire Department personnel and our partners with the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
 
The fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal. Sarasota County Fire Department is providing support to the firefighter, the firefighter’s family, and personnel involved in today’s incident. As well as support through the American Red Cross for those located at the home impacted.

Crews arrived on scene within six minutes. The fire is currently contained and is under investigation by the Florida State Fire Marshal.
During the incident, a Sarasota County firefighter experienced a medical emergency. Crews on scene provided medical care before the firefighter was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Additional updates will be provided as they become available.
