Around 10:30pm on Friday, July 3, members of the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office STAR (Strategic Targeted Area Response) Unit and K9 Unit conducted a traffic stop on a pickup truck that failed to make a complete stop at a stop sign. When a deputy made contact with the driver, later identified as Russel Denton (04/01/68), he was unable to provide proof of insurance, stating that the truck was borrowed from a friend. Meanwhile, a narcotics investigation quickly began when the K-9 unit alerted to the vehicle for the presence of narcotics after a free air sniff. As STAR deputies began searching the vehicle, a total of 38.5 grams of methamphetamine was found inside of a black bag that belonged to Denton.

As the search continued, deputies located digital scales, steroids, plastic baggies, and drug paraphernalia. Denton was placed under arrest for trafficking in methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting an officer without violence. Denton had just been arrested on April 29, 2026, for possession of Methamphetamine and was out on bond for those charges. If convicted, the new methamphetamine trafficking charge carries a minimum mandatory prison sentence of seven years.

“Significant narcotics arrests, such as this one, can have a broader impact on public safety beyond removing illegal drugs from the community. Individuals involved in drug trafficking are often connected to other criminal activity, including illegal firearms possession, theft, burglary, robbery, and acts of violence. It appears that this individual did not learn his lesson the first time around, so this time he can plan on an extended stay.” –N Sheriff Bill Prummell

The passenger in the vehicle, Matthew E. Healy (11/01/1972), was carrying brass knuckles in his pocket. He was also placed under arrest and charged with Possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

At the time of this post, both Denton and Healy are being held with no bond at the Charlotte County Jail.
