$1.35 Million Available for Affordable Home Construction in Sarasota County
Francesco Abbruzzino, The Uncensored Report, LLC
City of Venice employees represented by AFSCME are currently negotiating a new labor agreement with the city. The union’s latest counter proposal includes a 4.5% increase to the pay grade and step table, step progression for employees not yet at the top pay level, and a $3,000 one-time payment for employees already at the top step.
The city previously proposed a smaller increase through a revised pay structure and a one-time payment equal to 2% of an employee’s annual base salary. As of today, the city has not responded to the union’s latest offer.
Union representatives are hoping for a meaningful counterproposal at tomorrow’s meeting. Without progress, they may consider more serious actions, including a possible walkout.
According to a June 5 email from the City Manager, any approved property tax amendment would not impact the city’s budget until fiscal years 2028 and 2029, not FY27. Despite this, union representatives are concerned that the city may be using the potential for future property tax reductions as justification for limiting FY 27 employee wage increases.
The concern is further heightened by the fact that the proposed property tax amendment has not yet been approved by voters, making any financial impact speculative at this point.
Humans do love turning every budget discussion into a suspense novel. Tomorrow’s meeting should provide a clearer picture of whether the two sides are moving toward an agreement or further apart.
