The last of seven suspects arrested by the BPD in connection with a 2023 fatal armed robbery was convicted this week.
March 11, 2026, a Manatee County jury found Tyreak Allen, 23, guilty of first-degree murder, a capital felony, which carries a life sentence in the Department of Corrections. He was also found guilty of attempted armed robbery with a firearm and sentenced to 20 years to run concurrent with his life sentence.
On January 23, 2023, Allen, along with Jerome Williams, Shamar Mobley, Dorian Brooks, Kevion Brooks, Kobe Brooks, and Mekhi Booker, arrived at a home in the 100 block of 10th Avenue W., with the intent to rob James Jackson, Jr. The suspects demanded that Jackson give them a gold chain. When he refused, several of the suspects opened fire, hitting Jackson and two other men. BPD collected over 60 rounds from the scene.
Jackson died from his injuries on January 31, 2023.
BPD K9 Officer Smolarz heard the shooting and saw a car fleeing the area. The car crashed near the intersection of 13th Avenue W and 1st Street. K9 Drax (retired) apprehended Allen. Williams and Mobley were later spotted by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit and arrested.
As the investigation progressed, Detective (now Sergeant) Andy Perez and the Manatee Homicide Investigation Unit identified and arrested the remaining suspects.
Earlier this year, Jerome Williams, 23, pleaded no contest to attempted robbery and constructive possession of a firearm and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Mekhi Booker, 21, pleaded no contest to second-degree murder with a firearm and attempted robbery, and was sentenced to 15 years in prison on each charge, to run concurrently.
In 2025, Dorian Brooks, 27, pleaded no contest to a robbery with a weapon and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Shamar Mobley, 23, pleaded no contest to attempted robbery with a weapon and was sentenced to five years in prison with credit for time served.
In 2024, Kevion Brooks, 25, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder with a firearm and attempted robbery with a firearm. He was sentenced to 25 years and 15 years in the Department of Corrections, to run concurrently. Kobe Brooks, 22, pleaded no contest to grand theft and was sentenced to 18 months of probation.
