What started as a simple idea to bring neighbors together for a good cause has grown into one of South Gulf Cove’s most anticipated annual events.

On February 21, 2026, the 6th Annual SGC CCT Furry Scurry 5K Walk/Run will welcome more than 400 participants to South Gulf Cove for a morning filled with fun, community spirit, and a shared love for animals. This is not your typical 5K race. As organizers like to say, “It’s All About the Animals.”

The Furry Scurry was brought to life in 2021 after Mark and Marcia Vaccaro adopted their German Shepherd rescue, Kush, from Erik Hoffer of SWFL German Shepherd Rescue in Punta Gorda. Around the same time, Mark had just joined the board of the Conservancy and Community Trust of South Gulf Cove Inc. (CCT), a small, community-focused 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Wanting to bring awareness to the organization while uniting the neighborhood, he envisioned an event that would support local animal shelters and rescues and bring the entire community together.

No one imagined how quickly that idea would grow.

In its first year, the Furry Scurry donated proceeds to four animal charities. Today, the event proudly supports eight organizations each year, including EARS, Suncoast Humane Society, Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida, SWFL German Shepherd Rescue, Ruck9, Rescue Garage, Peace River Search and Rescue, plus a rotating bonus charity chosen annually. These agencies have become more than partners—they are friends and extended family to the event.

Fast forward to 2026, and the Furry Scurry has become a true regional fundraiser, drawing participants from across Florida and neighboring states, both in person and virtually. This year also marks a major milestone: the Conservancy and Community Trust will surpass $100,000 donated, with 100 percent of event proceeds going directly to animal charities since the event’s inception.

Adding to the excitement this year is a special surprise partnership with the National Auto Body Council. The National Auto Body Council is a nonprofit organization made up of businesses from across the collision repair industry that focus on community service and charitable giving. Through its signature Recycled Rides® program, the organization repairs and donates vehicles to individuals and families in need of reliable transportation.

The Furry Scurry is open to everyone—runners, walkers, families, and community members alike. Attendees can meet the shelters and rescues supported by the event, connect with local sponsors, and enjoy raffles and silent auctions filled with generous donations from area businesses.

Organizers are quick to point out that none of this would be possible without the incredible support of the community. Special thanks go to Paradise Exclusive, the event’s title sponsor since day one, along with all sponsors, volunteers, running advisors, participating businesses, and the many individuals who return year after year to support the cause.

As the event continues to grow, so does the excitement. Who knows what the future holds—maybe even a 10K someday. One thing remains certain: It’s All About the Animals.
