Charlotte County decides to move forward with e-bike safety rule changes after today’s public meeting

🚲⚡ New Safety Rules for E-Bikes & Scooters in Charlotte County
 
At today’s Board of County Commissioners meeting, the Board passed a new ordinance establishing safety regulations for electric bicycles, electric motorcycles, motorized scooters, and micromobility devices in the unincorporated area of Charlotte County. These updates are designed to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and riders sharing sidewalks and pathways.
 
What residents should know:
✅ Where they’re allowed
Electric bikes and scooters may be used on:
-Sidewalks
-Crosswalks
-Intersections
-Multi-use paths
-Designated bicycle paths

🚦 Speed limit
-Maximum speed is 15 mph on sidewalks, crosswalks, intersections, multi-use paths, and bike paths.
 
🚶‍♂️ Pedestrian right-of-way
Riders must:
-Yield to pedestrians at all times
-Provide an audible signal before passing someone on a sidewalk or shared path
 
🌙 Lighting requirements (dusk to dawn)
Devices must have:
-A white front light visible from at least 500 feet
-A red rear light or reflector visible from 600 feet
 
👧 Helmet safety
-Riders or passengers under age 16 must wear a properly fitted helmet that meets federal safety standards.
🚫 Where they are NOT allowed
Electric-powered devices are prohibited on:
-Trails
-Greenways
-Greenbelts

These rules will be enforced by law enforcement. Violations may result in penalties under Florida law.
