Bird Bay Village Historical Marker

Last week, Sarasota County Libraries and Historical Resources held a dedication ceremony for the new Bird Bay Village historical marker. The Bird Bay Village historical marker is the latest in a series of more than 80 historical markers erected by the Sarasota County Historical Commission since the 1970s. This marker explores the history of the Bird Bay Village neighborhood and its role in the broader development of Venice in the second half of the 20th century. This marker has the distinction of being the first “planned unit development” community in Venice, with more than a thousand units constructed over the years, proving that planned unit developments could thrive in the City of Venice.
