The Venice Police Department will join area law enforcement agencies this Saturday, Oct. 25 for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day so citizens may properly dispose of prescription medications.

Residents may drop off their expired or unwanted prescription meds in a drive-thru set up at VPD, 1575 E. Venice Ave., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Officers and staff will be on hand to assist. Liquids and needles will not be accepted.

Walgreens representatives will also be on site to give the community updates and goodie bags (as supplies last).

Disposing of medications down the toilet or sink contaminates the water supply and environment. Medications kept at home are highly susceptible to misuse and theft, and most people who abuse prescriptions get them from family and friends, according to authorities.

While secured drug take back receptacles are available to the public year-round, agencies participate in the national turn-in initiative to publicize proper disposal. Thank you for doing your part!
