A Sebring man was arrested after filing a false report of being carjacked by another man with a gun.
Shortly before 7am on Friday, October 10, 2025, the members of the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office (District 5) responded to a call claiming a carjacking had occurred and an armed subject fled on foot. Deputies took immediate action, conducting a search of the area and placing the nearby Babcock Neighborhood Schools on a soft lockdown. Additionally, members from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol arrived and assisted with the search.
CCSO deputies spoke with the driver of the vehicle, identified as Marty L. Hickey (03/02/1995), to begin an investigation into his report. Hickey claimed that an unknown black male, dressed all in black, had entered the rear driver’s side of his vehicle while stopped at a red light, armed with a shotgun. He stated that the man pointed the gun to his head and ordered him to drive. Hickey was unable to provide an explanation for why he stopped the vehicle on SR 31 in Charlotte County, from where the black male allegedly ran off into Babcock Ranch.
Deputies quickly determined that the details being offered by Hickey did not add up. Further investigation found that the vehicle he was in had been involved in a pursuit in Hendry County, fleeing from Hendry County Sheriff’s Office members into Lee County territory. HCSO positively identified Hickey as the driver in their pursuit.
CCSO deputies checked the vehicle and found nothing to indicate that anyone had been in the backseat. As they continued to investigate, they found that the vehicle had completely run out of gas. Deputies observed no tracks leading from the rear driver’s side of the vehicle and no signs of the vegetation being disturbed in the direction Hickey had claimed the male had run off. A glass container of suspected marijuana was located under the driver’s seat. The substance, which had a weight of 31 grams, was tested and obtained a positive result. When they began to ask Hickey about these facts, he invoked his rights and requested an attorney.
“When you file a false report that results in a complete waste of resources, you can bet there will be consequences. My deputies handled this incident appropriately and quickly found the holes in this young man’s ridiculous story. His actions caused fear in the community and unnecessary stress to the students and staff at Babcock Schools, so now he can reflect on that decision from inside his cell at the Charlotte County Jail.”
Sheriff Bill Prummell
Hickey was placed under arrest and charged with False Reports to Law Enforcement, Interfere with Minors Attendance of School, Possession of Marijuana Over 20 Grams, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
