Venice Police investigating threatening phone calls to the Jewish Center

1:30 PM UPDATE: Responding law enforcement agencies have cleared the scene at the Jewish Congregation of Venice. The threatening calls were determined to be a hoax, or “swatting,” and the Venice Police Department is aware that possible calls may have also been made to other places of worship in surrounding areas.
 

Venice Police has been on high alert as Yom Kippur begins tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 1 and authorities have seen increased threatening activities throughout the United States. VPD is coordinating with JCV’s security team and continues to communicate with our state and federal partners.

The Venice Police Department, Venice Fire Rescue, and the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office are currently responding to a reported threat at the Jewish Congregation of Venice on Auburn Road. 

 

Venice Police were notified that the JCC received phone calls threatening to “kill everyone.” This threat is serious in nature and is being investigated with law enforcement on site. There are no injuries, and there is no suspect. At this time the threat is limited to phone calls. The scene is very active, please avoid the area.
