Ryan Clayton Cole was sentenced to death for First Degree Murder, for the murder of 15-year-old Khyler Edman. He was sentenced to life in prison for First Degree Burglary with Assault or Battery, and 5 years in prison for Burglary.
Deputy Chief Assistant State Attorneys Shannon Doolity and Jennifer Garczewski prosecuted the case.
The defendant was convicted in May following a jury trial in Charlotte County. Cole murdered the victim during the commission of a burglary at a Port Charlotte home on September 26, 2019.
During the burglary, the defendant stabbed the young teen to death. He then burglarized a second home and was discovered by the homeowner during the commission of the crime.
This case involved a very detailed and extensive investigation by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.
“Cases like this are why we have the death penalty in Florida. There are few words to describe how absolutely horrific this crime was. No one should ever have to be a victim to crime, but to be a young boy in the safety of his own home, he should not have ever been forced to know fear,” said State Attorney Amira Fox.
