Off-duty Sarasota County Fire Department Lifeguard Landon Lacy rescued two swimmers from a dangerous rip current more than 150 yards off Venice Beach on May 30. It was caught on camera by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit.

Lacy, a lifeguard for the Sarasota County Fire Department, was off-duty at Venice Beach when he saw someone running with flotation devices toward the water. He looked at his cell phone and saw a Pulse Point notification for a water rescue at Venice Beach.

Despite being off-duty, Lacy’s instincts kicked in and he leapt into action, swimming out to two swimmers caught in a rip current, about 150 yards away from shore. Rip currents are powerful channels of water moving away from shore, capable of pulling even the strongest swimmers out to deeper water. Both swimmers were evaluated at the scene by Venice Fire Rescue.

Lacy’s quick thinking and decisive action averted a potential tragedy and epitomized the highest ideals of the Sarasota County community
