A Sarasota County jury has found a 19-year-old woman guilty of manslaughter in a 2022 homicide case that occurred in the City of Sarasota.

On Sunday, February 6, 2022, at 4:22 p.m., Sarasota Police officers responded to the 2200 block of Palmadelia Avenue after multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired. The initial investigation revealed that three juvenile victims had sustained gunshot wounds. A 17-year-old male victim was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he later died. A 16-year-old male victim was shot in the hand, and a 9-year-old female victim was shot in the shoulder; both were also taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital for treatment.

In addition to the injured victims, six more juveniles—ages 7, 10, 11, 13, 13, and 17—were in the line of gunfire but were not physically injured.

Sha’Miya Williams, 16 at the time of the incident, of Tampa, was charged with Homicide and Attempted Homicide in connection with the shooting. She was arrested by deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, February 7, 2022. Per Florida Statute 985.04(2)(a)1, information about juveniles charged with felonies is public record.

Thamar Liafortune, also 16 at the time, of Bradenton, was arrested in connection with the homicide investigation. He turned himself in to law enforcement on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, and faces charges of Homicide and Attempted Homicide.

Last week, during her trial, Sha’Miya Williams was found guilty of one count of Manslaughter and eight counts of Attempted Manslaughter.

Sentencing for Williams will be scheduled at a later date.
