Deputies arrest a Port Charlotte man after he sells meth to undercover detectives in a county park.

On November 18, 2024, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office received a tip from a concerned citizen that believed someone was dealing drugs in the Franz Ross Park in Port Charlotte. The tip was passed to the Narcotics Unit, who promptly began an investigation.

Detectives working in an undercover capacity made arrangements to meet the suspect, identified as Hubert William Coggins, Jr. (09/10/1996), and purchase methamphetamine on two occasions. Both times, the substance was tested, which provided positive results as methamphetamine. In total, detectives purchased 3g from Coggins. Following this, probable cause was established for his arrest.

On November 25, deputies located Coggins in his vehicle at a gas station and took him into custody. A free air sniff of his vehicle was conducted, and a K9 alerted to the presence of narcotics inside. A search of the vehicle followed, where deputies located a smoking pipe and a plastic baggie with a crystallized substance. The substance was tested and gave a positive result for methamphetamine. The total weight in the baggie was 8.4g.

“I want to thank the citizen who provided the tip to us that led to this arrest. I have been very clear that I will not tolerate drug dealing in my county, and to find it happening in a park where children play is nothing short of despicable. I applaud my Narcotics Team for their quick and appropriate work to put a stop to this.”

Sheriff Bill Prummell

Coggins was arrested and charged with:

  • Sale of methamphetamine within 1000 ft. of a county park (Felony) x2
  • Possession with intent to sell methamphetamine within 1000 ft. of a county park (Felony) x2
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia x3
  • Possession of controlled substance without prescription

He is being held at the Charlotte County Jail with a total bond amount of $132,000.00.
