Friday night at approximately 10:45 p.m., a Venice Police traffic officer attempted to stop a motorcycle that was driving recklessly in the area of W. Venice Ave. and Nassau St. The driver of the motorcycle refused to stop and accelerated to speeds over 100 mph, traveling south on Tamiami Trail.

Minutes later, the Sarasota County (FL) Sheriff’s Office received calls of a motorcycle crash at the intersection of S. Tamiami Tr. and U.S. 41 Bypass. The caller stated the driver of the motorcycle was fleeing on foot. SSO units and VPD units arrived on scene.

A perimeter was established, and VPD K-9 Palmer began a track for the suspect. Palmer tracked to a fence, and then into a wooded area in the rear of Bob’s Carpet by Gentian Rd./Ginger Rd. While on the track, units advised they located a loaded magazine to a 40mm pistol near the bike. With the assistance of SSO aviation, heat sources were located in the area where Palmer tracked to.

VPD officers apprehended the suspect, who was lying down in pepper trees, refusing to come out. The suspect, Liam Golden, 26, of Lehigh Acres, was armed with several weapons when taken into custody. He is now facing charges from both agencies. Thank you to our partners at the Sarasota Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this apprehension!
