This weekend Venice Fire Rescue will showcase our newest assets, four bicycles retrofitted with emergency medical response equipment, during the April 20 Venice Fire and Police Public Safety Day.

The bicycles will be manned by VFR Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) or Paramedics and carry medications and both basic and advanced life support equipment for emergency responses in high bicycle and pedestrian traffic areas, rough terrain and isolated areas, as well as special events, parades and festivals.

“The City of Venice has a very active bicycle community and the use of bicycles for emergency medical service (EMS) response makes sense for our demographic and proximity to the Legacy Trail,” says Assistant Chief-EMS Nathan McManus.

The bicycles will allow VFR to respond to areas that are not easily accessible by traditional response vehicles. With the faster response in crowded or non-traditional areas, EMS personnel will also be able to provide care and stabilize a patient while ambulance or helicopter transportation is in route, McManus added.

Funded through a Florida Department of Health EMS Grant and Sarasota County, the four bicycles were purchased from Bicycles International Venice and cost a total of approximately $4,000.

VFR plans to expand the EMS Bicycle Team with six additional bicycles and trailer cots to move patients in the future.

In addition to the VFR EMS bicycles debut, Public Safety features fun for the whole family including VFR rappelling demonstration, VFR vehicle extrication, Bayflite helicopter, K-9 demonstration, informational tables with Venice Police Department, Sea Tow Venice, Sarasota County Lifeguards, SPARCC, Crime Stoppers, Sarasota K-9 Search and Rescue, and free face painting, balloon twisting, hotdogs, and more!
