Tuesday evening the North Port Police Department was called to Baynes Rd. for a very dangerous situation. A barricaded armed and inebriated individual was threatening to harm himself and others. Shots were reported in the home. Through the course of several hours the Special Response Team, Drone Unit, Patrol Officers, and Crisis Negotiators, along with the use of every tool we possess worked to resolve the issue peacefully. The individual however stopped communicating.

Due to the concern about the declining health of the individual inside, the Special Response Team was forced to make a risky entrance. Several guns were within inches of the individual.

Despite a very tense few minutes, thankfully, the use of weapons was not needed. With the help of North Port Fire Rescue, first responders were able to get the individual quick medical care and stabilized without further incident. EMS crews believe that if the move to enter was not made, the individual would have likely died.

“These are not situations anyone asks for but sometimes these actions are needed,” says North Port Police Chief Todd Garrison. “We are very fortunate that we had the ending we did. Our officers should be commended for their bravery in saving someone in crisis with their own lives in danger.”
