North Port Walmart employees perform life-saving measures on resident

NORTH PORT FIRE RESCUE – Walmart employees and North Port Fire Rescue personnel responded to a medical event earlier this month, saving a life and setting an example for other employees and citizens on learning CPR.
On April 10 at around 5 p.m., North Port Fire Rescue personnel responded to a call at Walmart, 17000 Tamiami Trail, for a reported cardiac arrest. Before crews arrived, Suzan Martucci and Tanya Frener began life-saving care.
Once NPFR units arrived and initiated advanced life support care, the patient, Mary Ann Disanzo regained a pulse in less than one minute and began speaking within five minutes.
Mary would not have survived if the Walmart employees had not reacted and helped so quickly. This highlights the importance of learning CPR and/or AED training.
“If not for the quick thinking of the Walmart employees, this outcome could have been very different,” EMS Division Chief Brian Gorski said. “Their response, partnered with the exceptional care provided by our Station 82 C-Shift crew, put this patient in excellent hands.”
Crews shared their thanks with the Walmart staff on Thursday by stopping by to talk with the employees who took action and with Mary.
North Port Fire Rescue maintains an outstanding Return of Spontaneous Circulation (ROSC) Resuscitation rate. In layman’s terms, ROSC is when the heart starts beating again after it has stopped. The City boasts a 45.7% rate, nearly double the national average of 26.1%. Fire Rescue officials credit their highly skilled and trained personnel, North Port residents and businesses for their willingness to learn CPR and make AEDs available, improving our community’s overall safety and life-saving abilities.
