Sarasota Police work with the VPD to recover a stolen statue

Arrests and recoveries have been made in the unfortunate theft of the beloved “Sophia” statue from downtown Venice. The crime was captured on camera at 4:00 am on May 18th. In the video one of the individuals is observed breaking the statue off the base before carrying it away to a nearby car. Detectives were able to use area cameras to identify the car and driver. Both individuals were ultimately located and confessed to the crime,

They told investigators the statue was thrown in the water near the Ringling Bridge. Details were relayed to our partners at Sarasota PD, and their dive team members did a fantastic job recovering Sophia. Estimates to replace the statue are approximately $3800.
