The suburbs are changing to fit the times. The identical picket-fence bedroom communities of decades past are brimming with new construction, new businesses and plenty of entertainment options, mimicking what you might find in an urban downtown.

Following the recent urban-to-suburban migration trends, we set out to discover the places that strike the best balance* between a coveted suburban atmosphere and the benefits of big-city living.

According to our research, Venice emerged as number 5 on our list of the top US suburbs for blending the advantages of a city and its outskirts.

Some key stats that made Venice stand out from the rest:

  • With a 15% increase in local population over the past five years, this Sarasota community is rapidly converting into a place that can better cater to the expectations of the influx of city transplants who want to “live, work, and play” in the same place.
  • Venice has many features that make it attractive for urban enthusiasts: a lively business environment, a diverse residential sector, plus numerous shopping and dining options.
  • Less than 50% of homes here are single family residences, ensuring access to varied housing options. Additionally, new construction is booming, with over 42 building permits for new residential units per 1,000 people (the 3rd-highest figure in the top 100 suburbs).
