Evelyn Peters

Born November 8, 1917, in Lakewood, New Jersey, Evelyn is the oldest of 3 children (Stanley, the middle brother, and Marshall, the baby and spoiled one). All the siblings are two years apart in age, with Evelyn being 105 now. WOW!!! At the young age of 7, Evelyn caught Diphtheria.  Fortunately, she survived but ended up almost completely deaf. She attended Lakewood High School, where she took commercial classes. She excelled in her classes, earning an A in every subject. Her teachers wanted her to take college prep courses, but they didn’t offer accommodations for deaf people in college, so she did not do it. Evelyn graduated in 1935, which was during the Depression era. She had short-term jobs with Jersey Central Power & Light, the D.M.V., and was also a secretary for the County Engineer before finally getting a job at Lake Hurst Naval Air Station (where the Hindenburg blew up). Evelyn worked there for 30+ years before retiring in 1980. Due to her hearing impairment, she had to turn down several promotions as they would have required her to use a telephone. At the time, there were no devices to help the hearing impaired when using a telephone like there are now. In 1984 Evelyn and her mother (whom she lived with) moved to Florida following her brother Marshall who had already been living here for two years. They bought a home in the Jacaranda area near her brother. She was a very active member of the Venice Baptist Church for a great many years. She
was a member of the Money Counting Committee at her church for many years. She only gave it up when her health no longer allowed her to continue doing so. After her mother had passed, she moved to Ashton Gardens, where she lived alone for ten years until her health required she have assistance on a regular basis. Evelyn, along with her brother Marshall decided to move to Elison of Bella Vita in 2020. She was an avid Knitter and crocheter. She still plays Bocce, loves Bingo, Pet Therapy, and walks all around the community. She has a wonderful sense of humor when you get to know her too! Evelyn is a very independent woman and contributes her long life to her parents’ good genes. Her mother lived to be 101, and her father 90. Evelyn turned 105 on November 8, 2022. We wish her many more years of happiness and love! It has been such a joy working with Evelyn. I hope to have as long a life as she does.
