Update on the fatal accident in North Port last night

UPDATE: On 11-16-2022 at 2222 hours units responded to a reported vehicle crash (rollover) in the pond at northbound N Sumter Blvd just north of Lorri Cir. An off duty NPPD officer heard the crash from his house and entered the water with NPFD. Efforts to pull the entrapped occupants were not successful. Talon towing quickly responded and was able to remove the vehicle from the water. FD pronounced the occupants deceased at 2252 hours. Driver 17, passenger 16. Next of kin notifications were completed.
The investigation shows the vehicle entered the curve at a high rate of speed. The vehicle lost traction and entered a slide. The vehicle then vaulted off the bridge railing sending it airborne to it final rest on its roof in the pond.
This is an active and ongoing investigation.
EARLIER: NPPD is currently investigating a fatal crash in the north bound lanes of Sumter Boulevard near Lorri Circle, close to I-75. Please avoid the area. More details when appropriate.
