Incident Description
City crews were alerted of a break in the 16″ force main leaving Lift Station 40. Crews arrived on the scene and were able to isolate the 16″ force main and re-route flow from the station to the wastewater treatment plant through the 12″ force main. There was no interruption in sewer service. Upon investigation, crews discovered a portion of the top section of the 16″ pipe had deteriorated from H2S gas and failed. Crews were able to remove the damaged section of pipe and are replacing it with a new section of pipe. Approximately 340,000 gallons of wastewater entered a storm drain adjacent to the lift station site. The ultimate outfall for that storm water system is Whitaker Bayou. The sample collection process has already begun. The area was hosed down, treated with lime and vacuumed using the Vac Truck.
