Sarasota man could get life after being convicted on 17 charges, some involving battery on a pregnant victim

Francesco Abbruzzino, The Uncensored Report, LLC

State Attorney Press Release

State Attorney Ed Brodsky announced today that Alexander Mendez was convicted after a jury trial of 17 charges: Aggravated Battery (Pregnant Victim), Aggravated Battery (Great Bodily Harm), False Imprisonment, Tampering with a Victim, and 13 counts of Violation of a Condition of Pre-Trial Release From a Domestic Violence Charge. The initial crimes were committed on July 23, 2021 and investigated by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. The four-day trial was held at the Sarasota County Courthouse from June 27 through June 31, 2022.

The crimes carry a maximum possible sentence of 65 years in prison. The State is seeking enhancement of the penalty under Florida’s “Habitual Felony Offender” statute. If the Defendant is found to qualify as a Habitual Felony Offender, he will be facing life in prison. A sentencing date is pending.

The Defendant, who has a long history of domestic violence against multiple women, abused the Victim over the course of several hours in the early morning of July 23, 2021. Law enforcement responded to the residence after receiving a call about a female screaming for help. After no response at the house, law enforcement forced entry for the safety of the Victim and arrested the Defendant after an investigation. The Victim was approximately 7 months pregnant at the time of the abuse – thankfully, the child was unharmed. After being arrested, the Defendant continuously contacted the Victim from the Sarasota County jail to try to convince her to drop charges, lie to the State Attorney’s Office, and not testify at trial.

The lead prosecutor in the case, Assistant State Attorney S. Ethan Dunn, said:

“Domestic violence is a serious issue in our community. This type of abuse often escalates to the point of no return. I am thankful for the citizen who called 911 in this case and the men and women of the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office who responded to the scene. There is no doubt, given this man’s past, that their actions saved the Victim’s life. I am also thankful for the members of the Victim Advocate unit with the sheriff’s office who provided critical support for the Victim while this case was ongoing. Most importantly, though, I am thankful for the Victim’s courage and willingness to face her abuser in court despite his best efforts to keep her away. Her strength and courage should send a message to others that they do not need to accept treatment like this from people like the Defendant. Because of the efforts of everyone involved in this case, the jury saw the Defendant for who he really is. Alexander Mendez will now be held accountable for his actions and be punished for what he has done, providing some closure and peace of mind for everyone involved.”
